Stop Motion Animation

Our technology integration specialist, Mrs. Caskey, was in to help us learn stop motion animation this week.  Stop Motion is an app that allows you to take a series of pictures.  For each picture the students move a small part of the scene.  When the pictures are put together in the stop motion app, it creates an animation.  Our first animation project was to make words.  The children were given a group of letter cut outs.  Their assignment was to animate a series of words.  They had to change the beginning, ending, and middle sound sometime during the animation.  Here is just one student example:

In reading groups, the children have been learning how our world changes. One of our inquiry questions has been "How do different animals move and change?" The students read several different fiction and nonfiction books about how animals move and change. Their culminating project was to represent how one of the animals from the books moves. For these stop motion animations, the students choose their animal and worked in groups of two or three. They made their animals and scenes out of construction paper. They learned the smaller the movements between pictures, the more their video appears to be animated.

As we continued with our theme of how the world changes, we studied weather and seasonal change. We again went to the stop motion app to animate seasonal change. Since this was the students' third stop animation video, this time we taught our 5th and 6th grade buddies how to use the app. The children are very proud of their work. I am working on posting individual student stop animations to his or her blog page.  To get to individual pages, click on Student Pages at top of the blog, email me for your child's password.
