On day two of our Seuss celebration we read
The Lorax. The story of the Lorax beautifully compliments what we have been reading and learning about in reading. Our latest inquiry investigation has been to answer the question, "What are the Earth's natural resources and what can we do to protect them?"
Today we used to the Lorax to "Go green and wear green." We did a writing project and art project to go with our theme. The writing was "If I was the Lorax this is how I would help the Earth..."
The students used what they learned in the story of the Lorax, as well as, the eight books about Earth's resources that they have collected in reading group over the last month. It was amazing to watch the students synthesize all their information and discuss their ideas with each other. They collaborated, researched, made graphic organizers, revised, and edited to make some excellent pieces of writing.

| If I was the Lorax, this is how I would help our Earth by protecting
rocks. I would use less coal. I will conserve electricity by turning
off the light when I'm not in the room. |

| If I was the Lorax, this is how I would help our Earth by protecting animals. A couple ways to do that is not littering because some animals think its food and they eat it. Another way is not polluting water because oil and gas can get in the water and it makes animals that live in water sick. |
Of course, when you work this hard on a writing project, an art project always helps showcase terrific work. First, the students used marker to color a coffee filter into an Earth. Then, we sprayed the colored coffee filters with water. Watch out! The
colors blended together beautifully. The students are really proud of
their work.
