On Thursday we read There's a Wocket in My Pocket. The children were challenged to wear as many pockets as they could. My goodness, were these students ever clever! There was a fishing vest with 12 pockets, a creatively made pocket shirt, a shirt with Wockets already in her pockets, and a dress made entirely of air pockets!

With all these pockets we decided to use what we have been learning about place value to figure out how many pockets we had in our class all together! Oh yeah, we tackled double digits with regrouping. Look at all this thinking in our math journals. The students used a variety of strategies including mental math, expanded form, and using drawings of base ten blocks.
First we added each group's pockets. Then we had to add 32+37+34+44. Impressive. The students were really thinking and never gave up! We came up with 147 pockets...plus the air pockets. After this big math, we needed a recess break. Thinking that hard can wear a first grader out!
